There is a difference between dialogue and giving in. Neville Chamberlain gave in to Adolf Hitler. Barack Obama will attempt to establish a dialogue with Hugo Chavez. We are unsure of whether that was the first meeting. I doubt it. Will all be reconciled in one meeting? Of course not. But there is much more to be gained than lost from engaging in talks. How much worse could relations between the U.S. and Venezuela have been under George W. Bush?

In what my Dad would call a “senior moment,” Presidential candidate John McCain delivered this irony to end all ironies yesterday as he addressed the Russia-Georgia Crisis:
“In the 21st century, nations don’t invade other nations.”
